Description
Blue Water Women is for the young and young at heart who yearn for adventure. It is written for those women considering a life-changing direction and those seeking a career at sea. It is not an instruction book, but you will learn from the experience of other blue water women what you need to know to have your own adventures.
Interviewed within are 35 blue water sailing women from 26 years old to over 70 years; women from USA, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand. Some are new to crossing oceans, others have decades of experience. It is their opinions and advice that form the basis of this book and the ‘voice.’ For ease of reading the book is designed in five distinct parts and because of this you will find occasional overlaps of information. However, to access more in depth information extensive details are provided in the Appendixes.
Shared advice and experiences from our blue water women show you how to make the most of your adventure by giving you knowledge that will see you safely and confidently take that leap of faith to experience the joys of a life lived at sea.
More often than not it is still the man who has the boat and the partner follows, but that is changing. Today we see younger and younger women sailing solo around the world, and women of all ages sailing solo on their own boats, maybe taking on crew as necessary. The variety of women is amazing, from ages from 26 to 75, their different backgrounds and how they manage their watery way of life astounds. There is a broad spectrum of women sailors; captains of ships, those who skipper their own boats or own sailing schools, those who sail with and without partners and those who crew on other’s boats. Women of diverse nationalities. Women of all ages, creeds and sexual persuasion; those with babies and children, and those old enough to have great grandchildren. Some cruise for a short time, others for a lifetime. Some cruise on a shoe string, others are well funded. Some have created businesses associated with the sea such as chartering or providing services to the sailing fraternity, some are paid captains of larger vessels in Trade or Tourism. Some return to life on land, others keep at least one foot on a boat. But all share magic moments that only a life lived on the sea can give.
So what is it that entices so many women to take to life at sea? Could you be one of them? If so, this book will encourage you to make the leap, and help you turn your dream into a practical, joyous reality.
About the Author
Georgina de Vere set sail thirteen years ago at age 58, bitten by the bug to “Go Cruising” and has been wife and first mate living full time aboard her and her husband’s yacht, sailing the Pacific and Asia where they now sail on our second boat, “Stardancer”, a Gib Sea 47’ monohull. She sold her business and the house, took coastal sailing and navigation night courses, went to sailing school, and got her radio license and first aid certificates.
She runs her business consultancy from her boat, where she is well-known and respected for her knowledge and professionalism. Although she has written articles about her exploits in sailing magazines in USA, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, the idea of a book to encourage other women to sail never left her mind.
